The Clinical Study and the Key Problems of the Peritoneal Tuberculosis Including the Intestinal Tuberculosis


Abstract
Over a 10 year period, a series of 65 patients underwent some form of abdominal operation and
were proved to be peritoneal or intestinal tuberculosis histopathologically or microbiologically.
1. The high incidence was seen in first to 4th decade.
2. No sex ratio was remarkable.
3. Average duration of the disease was less than 3 years.
4. The frequent subjective symptoms were abdominal pain, diarrhea and weight loss.
5. The frequent physical signs were palpable abdominal mass, tenderness and distention.
6. The routine CBC or urinalysis was little helpful for the diagnosis.
7. In the routine chest X-ray 19 patients(29.2%) were negative to tuberculosis while 26 patients
had active pulmonary tuberculosis.
8. The barium enema or small bowel series was performed in small number of patients, with
great diagnostic aid.
9. Two third of the patients was misdiagnosed preoperatively.
10. The common complications were intestinal obstruction, intestinal perforation and ascites.
11. The predilection site of the intestinal tuberculosis was ileocecal region (89.7%).
12. The final diagnosis was based on Bochus criteria.
13. Eight patients (12.3%) died of suppurative peritonitis.
14. over all 80% of the patients was curable.
15. Additionally, 8 patients with Crohn¢¥s disease were discussed.
